Clonmellon Tidy Towns
Caring for our village and our environment
Welcome to our 4th edition of our Tidy Towns Newsletter. August was a month when we continued with the clean up off our village. August was the last month of the judging for the Tidy Towns Competition. We put a lot of effort into keeping our village, side streets, playground area, and surrounding areas clean. I used the above picture because it has a reflection. Our village is also a reflection; it’s a reflection of the people who live here. It shows to the people who pass through our village that we care about where we live.
This work is ongoing and if you would like to take part please do, just turn up on any of the days or nights that you see the tidy town’s team working and join us to improve where we all live. As we draw near to the end of tidy town’s competition for this year we wait to see how we did. This year we concentrated on cleaning up our streets, removing old plants, trimming trees, asking people to paint their buildings, cleaning the playground, cleaning up the bridge at Isaac’s well, again we thank all who gave us praise for our work in the village . August was when we had Heritage week. We had a small display in the market square called Isaacs Museum this was organized by Marian Tighe, it was a good display old objects such as ( old school boots, old bike lights, house telephone, old bottle of Esso oil, these were just a few that Marian had on display.
Going forward tidy towns will be focusing on the following for next year’s entry
- Community Garden
- Picnic Area at Isaac’s well
- Cleaning the River at Isaac’s Well
- New Bedding Plants
- Painting shop fronts and empty buildings
- New Street Furniture
- Games area at playground
- Recycling Bins Cleaned up
Community Garden:
We now have a site for this project thanks to Allied Recycling; they are a big contributor to the Tidy Towns, as you can see we have a big area to work with, and we cannot thank them enough for all their support to us over the summer.
This is a big project for us to do; it will require a lot of work to get this garden ready for next year. We now have plans for this community garden and we hope to start work over the next few months.
Isaac’s Well and Picnic Area and Bridge:
This project is something that will enhance the amenities for the village; we would like to purchase new furniture we hope to purchase the above seating and put new bedding plants in this area, as for Isaac’s Well we would like to have this restored, at present we are in contact with the Heritage Department with the view to having some restoration work carried out .The river is also getting looked at we have started to clean this and work is still ongoing we are in contact with the (OPW) with a view to get the river flowing again hopefully we will have this sorted for next year.
New Bedding Plants:
This is ongoing work and we will try to improve on the layout of our plants, flower arrangements’. We will put a lot more colour into the main street and surrounding areas, we will put new plants/ flowers down at the green space on the Mullingar Road beside Church View houses, and we are in contact with the Co Council to further develop this area.
Painting shop fronts and empty buildings:
During the summer some shop owners got into the spirit of tidy towns by painting their shop fronts, Ann Leonard’s shop was the first to do the painting and we thank her very much for her support for Tidy Towns. Day to Day painted their shop inside and outside. This is a good start to improving the buildings on our main street; we hope this will encourage other property owners to clean up their premises for next year’s entry.
Game area beside Playground:
This is a project that we would like to set up for all the youth in Clonmellon and surrounding areas. We are in contact with the Co Council. We would like to mark it out for a small football, basket ball, squash. We went around the housing estate and everyone we spoke to thought it was a good idea and are happy to see this space used for the betterment of the youth in Clonmellon.
Sponsors
We would like to thank all our sponsors for their support and we look forward to their continued support over the next year.
